|Houndz cool fractal images
I'm no expert on fractal geometry, chaos theory and their related fields, but would like to share my fascination with fractal images.
I was first introduced to them by a friend of mine in 1989. He was running fractint (a great fractal image generating program, free too) on a souped up XT. We rendered a mandelbrot that took about 20 minutes to finish. We then did a zoom and ended up going out to dinner while the ol' XT did it's thing. Upon returning from dinner, we did a little colour-cycling and looked at few images he'd saved. I was hooked.
I wasn't into computers at the time, but a few months later I picked up my first 'puter... a Mitsubishi MP286 portable. Even with its B&W LCD EGA screen, the images I could create were fascinating. Finally, a couple years later, I got a full fledged desktop, 486/SVGA/etc, and one of the first things I loaded onto it was fractint. Now I could appreciate and explore the world of fractals in their full glory.
From the start, my attraction to them was purely from an aesthetic point of view. Then, within a two week period, I saw two examples of how nature exhibits fractal geometry. Now I return to them occasionally just to enjoy the view.
|This fractal gave me my first look at how nature uses fractal geometry. There's an astilbe (false spirea) right outside the window of my computer room at home. One day as I was browsing through fractint's fractal types I came across this one which looked remarkably like a 2D version of the plant. I was astounded!
It wasn't more than two weeks later, when I was driving home from a softball game, that I looked up at the clouds and noticed a very fractal-like pattern. A cloud (or it may have been a jet contrail that had dispersed) stretched nearly 3/4 of the way across the sky. The edges had a very intricate pattern down the edge that was very fractal-like. Man, I wish I'd had my camera. By the time I got home, the cloud had dissipated.
